Over 148 billion US dollars is lost annually in Africa through corruption. This is disclosed as African experts working on anti-corruption matters Tuesday embarked on a two day meeting to reflect on their role in advancing the continent’s anti corruption agenda.
Speaking in Kigali Said Adejumobi, from the economic commission for Africa said Bureaucracy and politics alone are not the only way through which money is taken out the continent.
He said illegal financial systems that involves exaggerating costs for projects is also affecting the continent.

Acting chief ombudsman Nzindukiyimana Augustin said Ignorance and the desire for wealth among other are the root causes of corruption in Africa which is to blame for the suffering in the continent
Corruption remains the most pressing governance and development challenge Confronting Africa today.
Researchers, civil society representatives, private sectors and government officials and bilateral and multilateral agencies representatives at the Kigali meeting organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa will seek systematic and methodological way, to address the growing problem of corruption on the continent.
They are to engage key stakeholders at national, sub-regional and Regional levels. Meanwhile A global report on graft released late last year by anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International ranked Rwanda the 4th least corrupt country in Africa and among top fifty least corrupt countries in the world.
