The prime minister has been given six months to report to parliament on government progress in addressing loopholes in accountability uncovered in government institutions.

This after a parliamentary committee resolved to compile a blacklist of government institutions that have failed to account for their activities.

The public accounts committee of parliament found that over 9 billion has been lost by government over the past three years through irregular tendering processes supported by government institutions and the lack of accountability.

Presenting a report to the chamber of Deputies Juvenile Nkusi the committee chairperson said Kigali city council, ministry of education and Rusizi district were among the top culprits with a total amount of over one billion.

While public transporters Onatrocom, the Internal affairs ministry and Nyarugnge district did not have the right tendering documents.

The report which shows gross mismanagement in government institutions follows the committees’ scrutiny of 104 government institutions out of 315.
