Presidents Paul Kagame has been decorated by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni with the Pearl of Africa medal, the highest honour reserved for the heads of state, in recognition of his contribution to the 1981-1986 ruling NRM/NRA liberation struggle of Uganda.
Kagame in his acceptance speech Thursday after being awarded medals at NRM Liberation Day celebrations said that the opportunity availed to participate in the Ugandan liberation struggle can never equal what Rwanda gained from its neighbor.
upon receiving the medal he said he was greatly honoured to be a recipient of the medals
“These awards are testimony to enduring links, forged by a shared history and common struggle, between, not only our peoples, but other Africans.” He said.
Kagame explained that the strong ties between Uganda and Rwanda are demonstrated by how people of Uganda, led by President Museveni , stood by Rwanda when time came for Rwanda’s own struggle.
“I dedicate these medals to all Rwandese and Ugandans who committed their lives to fight for the freedom we enjoy today.” He added.
Kagame said the Challenge now is transforming societies, and both countries need to work together for freedom as they have to drive the countries and people forward
He further added that President Museveni is a strong advocate of regional integration, larger markets, greater intra-African trade & adding value to resources and Rwanda shares this commitment to a process that will give a bigger and more relevant voice in global affairs.
Kagame said Rwanda also shares the vision of Africa that he says should use its enormous assets to improve the living standards of its people. Adding that standing together is the only way to achieve the goal.Kagame also received Kagera medal. The other president to receive the medal was Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea.
President Museveni decorated his counterparts at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) 26th anniversary celebrations in the eastern district of Kapchorwa.
The two presidents are among the 470 other individuals to receive awards for their contribution to the liberation struggle.
The chairperson of the National Honours and Awards committee Gen. Elly Tumwine read out the names of the two presidents and gave background of the leaders’ contribution to the liberation struggle.
President Kagame was among the original 27 fighters who launched the struggle to liberate Uganda.
NRA took power in January 1986 after ousting the government of the late Tito Okello following 5 years of guerrilla war.
The celebrations under the theme: "Uganda the Land of Opportunities: NRM's contribution during the last half of the 50 Years of Uganda's Independence", come at a time when the country will celebrate 50 years of independence in October.
