Deported

Genocide suspect Leon Mugesera has been deported back to Rwanda ending  a 16 year legal battle to block his return from Canada.

He was returned to Rwanda aboard a light aircraft that touched ground Tuesday night at Kigali International Airport.

He face charges of inciting genocide and crimes against humanity stemming from an incendiary anti-Tutsi speech he gave in 1992.

In the 1992 speech Mugesera, then a member of Rwanda's ruling Hutu party the MRND, allegedly told more than 1,000 party members that they should kill Tutsis and dump their bodies in the river.

Mugesera maintains that the speech was taken out of context.

And had fought against his deportation claiming he might be tortured if deported. But the Quebec Superior Court dismissed his final appeal Monday prompting his deportation

Government said Mugesera will be held for a maximum of 72 hours by the national police for processing of charges after which his file will be forwarded to the National Public Prosecuting Authority.

The Prosecution, on his part said Mugesera will appear before a court within seven days, where readiness by both parties to commence substantive trial will be assessed.
