Water Crisis

Water crisis in Rwanda is to be history in five years. This as government is to allocate 1.5 billion US dollars to draw a master plan of water resources in the country for proper production distribution and management of water in the country.

The deputy director general of Integrated Water Resources Vincent de Paul Kabalisa reveals. He disclosed this at a workshop studying the better management of the water resources in the horn of Africa.

The meeting here in Kigali is being attended by members of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Hydrological cycle observing system.

The Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) last year during the Accountability Day in Huye District vowed to increase the number of people with access to clean and safe water.

Yussuf Uwamahoro, the EWSA Deputy Director General in charge of Energy, said the target is to have the entire population access clean water by 2017.

Meanwhile members of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development have expressed concern at the uneven and irregular availability and distribution of water resources in the horn of Africa region.

Saying the situation is being worsened by periodic droughts that affect the region leading to serious and devastating human, economic and ecological consequences

The water experts are to design and promote the sustainable and integrated water resources development and management in the IGAD region

This will be through enhancement of regional cooperation and collaboration in the collection, analysis, dissemination and exchange of hydrological plus hydro-meteorological data and information for water resources assessment, monitoring and management.
